Dr. Rasmussen Explains His Greatest Satisfaction From His Profession

What is the greatest satisfaction that Dr. Rasmussen derives from his profession? He explains below:

The greatest satisfaction that we see is the life transforming effects that it has on our patients. And with periodontal disease, this is something that does affect our systemic health, so it really is a lifelong commitment not just to oral health but also to systemic health of the patient as well.

We also find that many of our patients become an extended family, become very good friends of ours. In fact, one of my close friends, Arch Deal, got me into skydiving and got me into flying planes. Another great patient as well a good friend of mine is John Turner. And John, who is world-class barefoot water skier, got me into water skiing as well, but not holding it with my teeth!

It’s time to kick off another academic year with the Seattle Study Club- Tampa Chapter! This year we welcome new guest speakers, as well as exciting topics that will facilitate thought provoking group discussions.

Benefits of Dental Implants Over Dentures - Dental Implants Tampa

What are the benefits of using dental implants in lieu of a denture? Dentures are a replacement for teeth, but they are not really a natural solution, much like if we lost an arm or a limb. A prosthetic device certainly is something that might be necessary, but it will never be quite as good as the original. In contrast, dental implants offer a very natural solution for missing teeth. In fact, we know that when we lose our natural teeth and wear dentures, our chewing function and efficiency diminishes to roughly 20 percent.

By placing dental implants, we can restore to 90 to 95 percent. In fact, one of Dr. Rasmussen's patients who he treated back in 1987 had severe periodontal disease. His name is John Turner, and we could not save any of his teeth. Every tooth had to be taken out; we placed dental implants on the upper and placed dental implants on the lower. They amazing thing about John is that his hobby is--he is a world class barefoot water-skier, and John actually set four world’s records holding the tow line in his teeth as he was barefoot waterskiing, and John continues to this day. We see him twice a year, and his implants are doing perfectly well. He smiles, he eats anything he wants to eat, bone and soft tissue perfectly preserved, just an outstanding success story.

Common Myths About Dental Implants

There are a lot of myths about dental implants, but today we'd like to talk about what is probably the most common and definitely the most serious one: that all dentists are equally qualified to place dental implants. As a periodontist, we have three additional years of advanced surgical training to learn how to properly place dental implants. Whereas, a lot of the general dentists only go through a weekend dental implant course as opposed to what we go through. To properly diagnose a treatment plan, place dental implants and deal with the complications, it does take several years of advanced training. Another common myth is that dental implants are very painful and take a long time to place. The truth is that they are actually a very short duration of treatment, and they are actually a very comfortable treatment. Most patients have minimal discomfort after the procedure and can get by with just Tylenol and Advil.

How Long Does Dental Implant Treatment Take?

How long does dental implant treatment take? Dr. Rasmussen explains how advances in modern dental implantology, treatment that even a few years ago would take months to complete can be completed on the same day--which means that patients can leave our office with teeth in place that they can smile with, feel confident with, and chew with.

Wisdom Teeth Removal With Dr. Rick Rasmussen III

Do you need your wisdom teeth removed? Dr. Rick Rasmussen III explains why a patient should have them removed with him:

Traditionally third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, have been taken out by the oral surgeon. In fact, my periodontal residency at the University of Florida is probably one of the only residencies in the United States that heavily trains with wisdom teeth extractions. Over the time that I learned my periodontal training, I have seen lots of periodontal defects that result from third molar extractions. And so by applying that knowledge to my oral surgery technique I am able to basically help prevent those future defects from occurring after the extraction and essentially help the patient, give them a win-win situation. In addition, the patient has less discomfort, less swelling, and seems to have an overall better experience when treated at our office.

One of the advantages I have of noting that there are periodontal defects that exist after third molar extractions is I can take that into account when doing my surgeries and help prevent them in the future, therefore making a more conservatory surgery for the patient. In fact, the patient can actually avoid a second surgery.

The Rasmussens: An Entire Family of Dentists

Dr. Rick Rasmussen III is the oldest son of Dr. Richard Rasmussen, Jr. and Dr. Angela Rasmussen (of Gentle Dentistry). In this special blog, Dr. Rasmussen III describes what it is like to grow up with parents who are in the field of dentistry and what it is like today, joining dad as a periodontal surgeon at Implant & Periodontal Therapy

My mom, my dad, my wife, my brothers, my sister are all dentists, so you can imagine growing up I knew a lot about dentistry. In fact, from a young age, I always wanted to be a dentist. It is funny because at the dinner table, we always have a lot to talk about and we can bring each other ideas for how to treat different patient’s situations. To say that I am passionate about dentistry is an understatement. Every day I look forward to treating new patients with new unique problems and situations and to help them solve that issue, achieve good oral health, and as a result, ultimately, achieve good systemic health.

Periodontal Plastic Surgery

At Implant & Periodontal Therapy, we offer many treatment services to our patients (in addition to gum recession treatment and dental implant placement for the past 32+ years!). One of the treatments we offer is periodontal plastic surgery. Patients who have altered active/passive eruption (gummy smile) might benefit from this procedure. For example, this patient below presented to our office with a desire to fix her "gummy smile". For beautiful results, Dr. Rick Rasmussen, III performed a periodontal plastic surgery procedure utilizing a combination of esthetic crown lengthening and lip repositioning. What's the best part? The surgery was minimally invasive and healing was quick (and beautiful!). Look at the difference!

How Does Dr. Rasmussen Earn the Trust of His Patients?

Trust is very important when it comes to a doctor-patient relationship. So how does Dr. Rasmussen earn the trust of his patients? A long time patient and now personal friend of Dr. Rasmussen answers that question!

He certainly had the knowledge—that came through all the way. He explained everything that was going to happen and he was right on the button for everything. He became a very close, personal friend. I felt very confident all the time in seeing him not only as a periodontist, but as a friend.

Being in the television business for many years and working with all sorts of professional equipment I was very impressed by his office. I saw only professional gear and the people were so knowledgeable and that really impressed me.

In going into the office regularly I ran into many other patients and everybody seemed so relaxed and calm and enjoying that. And everybody wanted to look their very best with their dental health and that really came through.
