As pioneers in our field of expertise, Implant & Periodontal Therapy understands the importance of continuing education to remain on the leading edge of periodontal health. Dr. Richard Rasmussen, DDS himself gives and takes more than 200 continuing education hours annually. On March 7-9, Implant & Periodontal Therapy was given the perfect opportunity to invest in continuing education and the team did not hesitate to attend! This year, Tampa was the host city to the annual meeting of the Academy of Osseointegration, the premier international organization of clinicians involved in the surgical and restorative management of patients utilizing the protocols originally innovated by Professor Per Ingvar Brånemark. The organization was founded in 1987 and has more than 6,000 members from nearly 70 countries. Drs. Richard and Angela have been members of AO for the past 25 years. Their sons, Dr. Richard III and Matthew are now members of the AO as well.

To celebrate the Academy of Osseointegration’s presence in Tampa, Implant & Periodontal Therapy and the Rasmussen Family hosted a dinner party with fine wine on the first night of the meeting for many of the international guests and lecturers. The goal was to put together some of the finest minds in the world under one roof in a casual setting without corporate intervention. We believe that we exceeded our own expectations.

To make the night extra special, our guests were greeted by our team members in not one but two HUMMER stretch limousines for transport to West Palm Wines. Our guests were served Delamotte champagne (the second wine of what we consider to be the finest champagne on the planet, Salon), Puligny Montrachet and a choice of 1993 Poggio Grannoni, 1997 Chinon or 1994 Lynch Bages. For our guests who prefer scotch, a choice was given of MacCallan 18 year or Johnny Walker Blue.

For dinner, Chef Paddy prepared another evening of his special creations. Our guests were served Coq Au Vin, Beef Wellington, sides of smashed herb potatoes, sautéed zucchini, yellow squash, carrot and roasted red peppers. He also made Dr. Angela’s Salad, which is a mix of tender greens with Provolone cheese ,sliced chorizo, tomato, cucumber, and olives with a lemon-garlic vinaigrette. For dessert our guests were treated with cream puffs and a chocolate sheet cake.

In addition to Chef Paddy’s special creations, our guests, who are world class clinicians, were able to review treatment concepts in a casual setting with an amazing selection of fine wines and cigars. In addition to Delamotte Champagne, Puligny Montrachet, Poggio Grannoni, Chinon and Lynch Bages, we served a Salamanazar of Chateau Marjosse. The Salamanazar of Chateau Marjosse equals a case of wine! Throughout the evening, some additional gems were served. Some rare bottles of 1996 Quintarelli Alzero cab france and 2003 Quintarelli Rosso de Bepi blend were opened.

For dessert, we opened a magnum of 1980 Chateau D’Yquem to serve with the puff pastries, chocolate cake and foie gras.

Our guests of honor were Nicholas Allen and his lovely wife Teil, who have nothing to do with osseointegration, but everything to do with wine. We were so pleased when they graciously accepted our invitation to join us for dinner.

Nicholas is the heir to Clarence Dillon, the American financier and former ambassador to France who purchased Chateau Haut Brion in 1935. Haut Brion is one of the original four first growths from the classification in 1855 for the left bank, along with Chateau Lafite, Chateau Latour and Chateau Margaux. It was one of Thomas Jefferson’s favorite wines and certainly tops on our list. It is also one of the most coveted wines in the world.

Nicholas, and the other Dillon family descendants of his Great Grandfather Clarence Dillon own the amazing first-growth Chateau Haut-Brion, its sibling rival and equally esteemed Grand Cru Classe-A Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion, a recent winery acquisition in St. Emilion- Chateau Quintus, and Nicholas owns what he calls a "Neo-Classic" portfolio of wines from Northern California, Carte Blanche.

We were just happy to have Nicholas and Teil join us to tell us their incredible history and story of wine, but Nicholas insisted on bringing magnums of the first growth Haut Brion, Mission Haut Brion and Carte Blanche Cabernet, Carte Blanche Proprietary Red, Carte Blanche Pinot Noir, Carte Blanche Syrah, Carte Blanche Chardonnay, and Carte Blanche Proprietary White for everyone to enjoy. Needless to say, the evening was over the top.

As the night ended, our guests were comfortably transported back to their hotels in the Hummer limousines so that they were well rested for the AO meeting the next day. But that is not before they were handed goodie bags filled with some of the mementos of Tampa and the party.

This could go down in history as the most incredible gathering of minds under one roof! Dr. Richard Rasmussen DDS, Dr. Richard Rasmussen III, DMD and Dr. Matthew Rasmussen, DMD of Implant & Periodontal Therapy are proud members of the Academy of Osseointegration. ----
