Treating periodontal disease is not only pertinent to your oral health but research has indicated that periodontal disease also affects the body’s overall health. Periodontal disease could increase the risk factor for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease among other health-related issues. More recently, research has suggested that a pregnant woman with periodontal disease may be more likely to have a baby that is born prematurely or have low birth weight. There are, however, treatment options available to treat this gum disease. According to the Journal of Periodontology, pregnant women can lower this risk by getting scaling and root planing treatment. We highly recommend that everyone have regular cleanings and exams with their dentist to ensure excellent oral health.
